Pregnancy loss affects a quarter of all pregnancies, many trade union members and workplace reps will have supported someone who has experienced pregnancy loss, and many will have experienced it themselves. The TUC recognises that more needs to be done to support families experiencing pregnancy loss and to close the gap in statutory rights.

Black women's experience of sexual harassment in the workplace

The TUC undertook this research in collaboration with Queen Mary University of London in order to create a space for Black women to share their experiences and inform the work we do to tackle sexual harassment in the workplace. As the voice of more than 5.5 million working people, we have an obligation to ensure that our movement is responding to the biggest challenges working people face.

Report summary: The health and safety effect of night work

This report investigates workers’ experience of night work and the impact it has on their lives. The research included five unions: the Communication Workers Union (CWU), The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), The Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA), Equity, and Community.

The health and safety impacts of night working

This report provides a review of the literature on the impact of night and shift work on workers’ health and their families and an analysis of night work premia, based on rates provided by the Labour Research Department. It then sets out research exploring workers’ experience of night work and the impact it has upon their lives, the factors that shape their decision-making about night work, how both organisational and labour market factors and changes shape night work and the measures that employers and unions take to mitigate risk.

TUC Equalities Campaign Plan 2024 – 2026

Our Equality Campaign Plan provides affiliates with details of the overarching narrative for the work that we do to challenge inequality in the workplace and covers our work on Black workers, women, disabled workers, young workers and LGBT+ workers. The priorities outlined here have been identified by our democratic structures and through our statutory conferences and are set out in the context of the driving aims of the TUC running until 2026.

Making employment rights work

The new government was elected on a platform that included making the minimum wage a living wage, basic individual rights from day one and expanded family-friendly working. This report sets out a five-point plan to ensure that the enforcement system is able to support the new government’s plans.

TUC Equality Audit 2024

The 2024 audit looks at equality bargaining and covers a difficult yet inspiring time for our movement. It comes after the Covid-19 pandemic which exposed structural disadvantage and discrimination in our society and a cost-of-living crisis that disproportionately impacted Black workers, disabled workers and women. We’ve also had hostile attacks from the Conservative government on migrants, disabled people, trans people and other marginalised groups to deflect from the economic chaos they caused.

Bullying, harassment and discrimination of LGBT people in the workplace

This research from the TUC provides a powerful and important insight into the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans plus (LGBT+) workers of bullying, harassment and discrimination at work. The polling we have undertaken for this research complements our qualitative report Being LGBT+ at Work and helps to underline the lack of progress in eradicating the unfair and discriminatory treatment that the LGBT+ community face in workplaces.

Promoting and protecting the rights of women workers in the agricultural sector in Palestine

Women make up the majority of the workforce in the agricultural sector in Palestine and the illegal settlements. They face systemic discrimination, low wages and poor working conditions. Most workers do not know about their rights or how to enforce them. The greatest challenge these women face is the negative impact of the occupation on the agricultural sector.

Strengthening democracy and accountability in the Eswatini trade union movement

The Kingdom of Eswatini is ruled by an absolute monarch and trade union rights are severely curtailed. The trade union movement is at the forefront of the struggle for democracy. Through training and education, this project aims to strengthen the democratic structures of TUCOSWA, as part of enabling workers to build democratic and accountable unions, states and institutions.

Falling behind on labour rights

This report reveals that the UK has long lagged most equivalent countries when it comes to safeguarding people at work. The gap widened after Conservative-led governments took power from 2010. This matters because separate research shows that strong labour protections are associated with better economic outcomes like higher employment and a greater share of profits for workers.

The AI Bill Project

The TUC has been conducting a four-year project on the use of AI in the employment relationship, assisted by a trade union working group (The TUC AI Working Group).

Artificial Intelligence (Regulation and Employment Rights) Bill

This paper sets out the background to the TUC Artificial Intelligence (Employment and Regulation) Bill, the multi-stakeholder process behind the drafting, why the Bill is needed, and how it could improve the rights of working people.  

Introducing fees in the Employment Tribunals and the Employment Appeal Tribunal

Trade unions, their officials and union workplace representatives have extensive experience of representing members and helping them to resolve workplace disputes. The TUC believes that it is in the interests of all parties to resolve workplace disputes as swiftly as possible before they escalate. Where it is not possible to do this by using workplace procedures, unions will seek to defend their members’ interests by supporting meritorious claims to an employment tribunal. This experience means we understand just how important it is for workers to have unimpeded access to the justice system.

Making hybrid inclusive

Our research finds that access to and experiences of home/hybrid are inherently linked to other forms of discrimination at work, in this case workplace racism, and that well-designed hybrid working is essential to avoid exacerbating discrimination and also to promote equality.

Spring Budget 2024

The UK’s economic vulnerabilities are increasingly evident, and a strategy to protect our economy from recession and revive growth and living standards is imperative. In this submission we show that policy should be aimed at boosting public investment and repairing public services, ending the public sector recruitment and retention crisis. This should be accompanied by real support for jobs and living standards, a minimum wage target of 75 per cent of hourly pay, a jobs guarantee and permanent short time working scheme. Cost of living support should be extended (not halted) and government should set a path to improved social security payments and a new approach for those facing economic inactivity due to their health.

Women and Equalities Committee consultation on the rights of older people

We appreciate the opportunity to respond to the Women and Equalities Committee consultation on the rights of older people. Our consultation focusses on two questions – digital exclusion for older people, and what more needs to be done to support older people who want to stay in work longer.
