As a union rep, you have an essential role to play in fighting discrimination, since you’ll often be the first point of contact for members who are having problems.
But unions can also help to identify how workplace policies and practices can undermine BME workers. This is called institutional racism.
The most effective way to achieve long-lasting change is through collective agreements, backed by the law. But as a first step, we must identify and challenge discrimination towards BME workers.
Reps should support their members with race discrimination complaints, as well as working to build a more equal workplace for everyone.
