It is notable that five years after the report of the Taylor Review of modern working practices that most of its flagship measures remain unimplemented. And the employment bill ministers repeatedly committed to appears to have been shelved. We need a new approach that restores power to workers to negotiate better rights.

Summer holiday childcare: no let up for working mums

The summer holidays this year will be tougher than previous years. For many mums they are constantly trying to manage schooling, wraparound care, informal childcare support, annual leave, formal childcare and holiday provision and a careful arrangement of hours between adults in the household. The government must help working families balance paid work and childcare, by reforming the system of parental leave and flexible working rights.

Flexi-job apprenticeships

TUC response to the government consultation. The proposed flexi-job apprenticeship model is very likely to promote even more precarious job patterns. The government should prioritise tackling the root causes of insecure employment and incentivise employers to recruit apprentices for the long-term rather than promoting even more short-termism.

The future of flexible work

New polling in this report reveals an emerging class divide as some workers opt to keep working from home whereas those who can’t work from home have little access to any forms of flexible working. It reveals a significant divide in access to homeworking between higher-paid and working-class occupations. The polling finds strong demand for other forms of flexible working from all groups of workers, such as control over working hours.

The forthcoming Employment Bill provides a vital opportunity to put in place measures to ensure that decent work becomes widespread and that practices like zero hours contracts are left in the past.

BEIS Carer’s leave consultation response

The TUC rejects the proposal that carers leave should be unpaid. Unpaid care is still not given the recognition it deserves from either government or employers. In this submission we look at the issues facing carers and evidence from trade unions, before responding to the specific consultation questions.

Transparency: Flexible working and family related leave and pay policies

The TUC welcomes the opportunity to respond to the BEIS consultation on improving the transparency of employers’ flexible working and parental leave and pay policies.

New analysis by the TUC shows that at least 3.7 million workers in the UK, around one in nine of the workforce, are in insecure work. Insecure work is not restricted to any particular corner of the country. It is widespread.
