Making work pay is good economics

The UK has experienced the longest pay squeeze in modern history, a proliferation of insecure work and stagnant economic growth. This has come alongside poor employment protection – with UK labour standards generally less protective than other developed economies.

Modelling the economic benefits of the Employment Rights Bill

The government has conducted a cost benefit analysis of the Employment Rights Act but acknowledges this is incomplete because it is not able to monetise many of the wider benefits of the package. Our analysis takes some of the benefits identified by government which have been left unquantified and produces quantitative estimates for them. This produces a central estimate for total benefits at £10.3 billion (ranging from £5.0 billion to £15.7 billion).

Proposal for new mandatory human and labour rights and environmental due diligence legislation

The TUC and unions are campaigning for new legislation that would give organisations greater legal responsibility for preventing labour and human rights abuses and environmental harms in their global value chains. We welcome Labour’s commitment in the National Policy Forum to “assess the best way to prevent environmental harms, modern slavery and human and labour rights abuses in both private and public sector supply chains including effective due diligence rules,” in government.
