Overview

This seminar will be one of several sessions aimed at developing the recommendations set out in the TUC’s a Better Recovery report for a regional and sub-regional level. This session will look at how headline objectives around creating jobs and investing in sustainable industry can be turned into tailored strategies for each region and pursued through devolved administrations and local government, asking:

  • How do we define and measure “good” jobs?
  • How can we make sure jobs created are good jobs?
  • How do we make all jobs better? What is the role of devolved authorities and local government in this?
  • What does good learning and skills support look like, including retraining, IAG, future careers and adapting for the digital age?
  • How do we tackle inequalities in the labour market and beyond?

The meeting will be chair by Kevin Rowan, TUC head of Organisation, Services and Skills, and speakers are:

  • Julie Nugent, West Midlands Combined Authority, Director of Productivity and Skills
  • Ken Skates, Welsh Government, Minister for the Economy, Transport and North Wales - @KenSkatesMS
  • Mary Bousted, NEU, Joint General Secretary - @MaryBoustedNEU
  • Paresh Patel, Unite, East Midlands Regional Secretary - @PPatelUnite
