General complaints

If you have a complaint or concern about the TUC or its staff, please contact your union in the first instance, or alternatively contact the General Secretary or Assistant General Secretary of the TUC on info@tuc.org.uk.

Complaints about the TUC General Secretary

The TUC Executive Committee adopted the following policy for complaints about the conduct of the General Secretary at its meeting on 4 April 2023. If you have a complaint about the conduct of the TUC General Secretary, please follow either the informal or formal processes outlined below.

Informal process

  • If someone wishes to make an informal complaint about the conduct of the general secretary, they should:
    • Write to the President; or
    • Contact their general secretary or trade union representative on the General Council who may contact the general secretary directly; or
    • Contact their general secretary or trade union representative on the General Council who may contact the president directly;
  • Where the situation cannot be resolved through informal discussion, consideration should be given to the use of mediation.
  • It must be noted that this is INFORMAL and that any person involved in assisting in resolving the problem must deal with the matter on a confidential basis.

Formal process

  • If someone wishes to make a formal complaint about the conduct of the general secretary, the complainant should contact the TUC president, outlining their specific, evidenced complaint in writing.
  • The president will report any formal complaint received to the Executive Committee.
  • The president will have the power to appoint a member(s) of the EC and/or  an external expert to undertake an investigation into complaints against the general secretary. The outcome of any investigation will be shared with the Executive Committee.
