Everyone should be entitled to a safer and healthy workplace and the law says that employers have to protect their employees by removing or reducing risk as far as is reasonably practical.

They must do that through assessing risk and then managing it. The TUC has a useful guide to risk assessment.

Despite what the law says, over 35 million days are lost every year because of illness caused by work with 600,000 people injured and 1.3 million suffering a work-related illness.

Union health and safety representatives are key to helping ensure that workplaces are safer, especially if they receive proper training through the TUC or their union.

The TUC has published guidance on how to tackle many of the commonest workplace risks that can cause cancers, stress-related illnesses or musculoskeletal disorders.

In addition they are dealt with in the TUC handbook, Hazards at Work.
