The visit, to deliver two vehicles and special equipment, tools, and personal protective equipment to rescue squads in the coal industry, saw meetings with the Independent Trade Union of Miners of Ukraine (NGPU) and the leadership of the Confederation of Free Trade Unions of Ukraine (KVPU). The visitors were shown the shocking destruction of mining communities and met some of the workers facing daily danger.
That very evening the rescue equipment was put straight to work following an attack on one of the local mines which was shelled while 287 miners were at work. Fortunately, this time there were no casualties.
Olesya Bryazhunova, International Secretary of the KVPU, said: “We express our heartfelt gratitude to our British friends for their unwavering support of Ukrainian workers and the trade union. Boundless gratitude to the brave rescuers of [the] Mine Rescue Squads who save miners underground and, on the surface, as well as civilians after enemy attacks on their homes.”
