Language support for workers will help reps recognise that English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) learning is an opportunity to gain new members by demonstrating how the support of a union can have a positive impact. Helping workers with their English benefits employers and unions. In fact, it’s a great area for all reps to get involved with, not just union learning representatives (ULRs), because it offers opportunities to strengthen the union, learn more with this interactive guide.

Who is this interactive guide for?

This guide is for union members and reps who want to learn about language support for workers,  helping workers and strengthen the union.

How will this guide help me?

This guide will:

  • describe the benefits of ESOL learning on the lives of many workers
  • help reps argue the business case for ESOL learning to employers and highlight why this is a union issue
  • suggest ways to set up and support ESOL activity.

How do I complete it?

All you need is an internet-enabled mobile device (a phone or tablet) or a computer. Do as little or as much as you like each time you log on — your progress will always be saved. Next time you log on just pick up where you left off, this one will take you about 15-45 minutes to complete. 

Upon completion of this module, you will receive a digital credential as proof that you have done this e-learning. You will receive this via email (from the TUC via Acclaim), so please keep a look out for it. 

What is a digital credential?

A digital credential is evidence that you have completed this piece of e-learning. You can share your credential with your union colleagues or employer to show them what you know.
