Unity Works - and we're proving it again

Britain is full of people who care deeply about their communities, their families and their futures.

Every day working people keep this country going - in our hospitals, shops, factories, railways and offices. And despite the challenges we face, there is a real appetite for change and a belief that Britain can do better.

Yet too often that optimism is frustrated by a system that doesn’t working for ordinary people.

You can put in the hours, do everything right, and still feel like you’re not moving forward. For too many the old promise - that each generation will do better than the last - feels increasingly out of reach.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Decline is not inevitable. A fairer, more hopeful Britain is absolutely within reach if we choose to build it together.

That’s why the TUC is launching Unity Works - a new campaign rooted in the belief that when working people stand shoulder‑to‑shoulder we can shape a better future.

We know unity works because history shows us exactly that.

Paid holidays weren’t a gift. Safer workplaces didn’t magically appear. Maternity rights and the minimum wage weren’t favours from generous politicians and employers. They were fought for, won and defended by organised working people who refused to accept that inequality was inevitable.

And we can win again.

Recent victories prove it. Thanks to unions, the government is delivering new rights for millions of worker.

Sick pay from day one, guaranteed‑hours contracts and an end to fire‑and‑rehire.

These are real, concrete improvements in people’s lives delivered by workers standing together.

But these steps forward must be the beginning not the end.

Unity Works is about working together for:

  • Fair pay so work genuinely lifts people up.
  • Decent rights so no worker is treated as disposable.
  • Strong public services so every community has the foundations it needs to thrive.
  • Fair taxes so the wealthiest and biggest corporations finally contribute what they should.
  • Cleaner politics so decisions are shaped by ordinary people and communities - not deep‑pocketed donors or corporate lobbyists.

And here’s the thing - the public is already with us.

New TUC polling shows a country hungry for leaders who unite not divide.

Seven in ten people say communities working together delivers better outcomes. Only a tiny minority believe progress comes from setting people against each other.

And people are in no doubt about who holds too much sway. Three-quarters believe major political donors have excessive influence. Two-thirds say the same of multinational corporations.

Working families want something different - fairness, unity and a political system that puts their needs first.

That’s exactly what Unity Works stands for.

Working people still have the power to shape Britain’s future.

Today’s launch is just the start. Please get involved and support the campaign. Share your stories of how unity works in your workplace and community!
