There’s no denying it: the national picture is tough. And our politics - must and should - be better.
But even now, especially now, unions are still winning life-changing victories for working people.
Take the 25,000 NHS staff who, through UNISON, finally got justice. After years of being wrongly denied pay, they secured over £100 million in compensation, alongside £40 million in pay rises.
That’s bills paid. Pressure eased. Dignity restored.
Or consider the 10,000 Wilko workers supported by GMB, who lost their jobs but didn’t lose their voice. Together, they won £2 million in compensation after the company collapsed. Proof that even in the hardest moments, collective strength matters.
In Doncaster, 4,000 workers stood shoulder to shoulder and won pay rises worth millions more for their families.
Think of Unite members at Bosch Rexroth in Glenrothes, workers were told to accept pay cuts of up to 40%. They refused. They didn’t just hold the line - they won a pay rise instead.
Think of Unite members at Bosch Rexroth in Glenrothes - facing pay cuts of up to 40% and refusing to accept them. They didn’t just hold the line. They won a pay rise instead.
These aren’t isolated success stories.
They’re a snapshot of what unions achieve every single year: real wins that change real lives.
And union influence doesn’t stop at the workplace. Because of union campaigning, from April millions of workers will receive sick pay from day one - so no one has to choose between their health and their wages ever again.
More protections are on the way too:
An end to fire and rehire
An end to exploitative zero-hours contracts
A stronger, fairer floor of rights for working people
These aren’t abstract policies debated in committee rooms.
They put food on tables.
They buy kids a new coat.
They replace fear with security.
They give people control over their lives.
They change lives.
That’s the difference unions make.
So this ❤️HeartUnions Week, help spread the message. Talk about unions. Share the stories. Be proud of what we achieve together.
Because the truth is simple: when unions do well, working people do well - and when working people thrive, Britain becomes a fairer, kinder place for us all.
