Commenting on the publication today (Wednesday) of a report on the UK by Philip Alston, the UN rapporteur on extreme poverty, TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

“No one should be growing up in poverty today. But the last decade has been a toxic mix of stagnant wages, rising job insecurity and cuts to vital services and support for families.

“We need to change direction. The government must end the freeze on financial help for those with low incomes. And it must scrap Universal Credit, which is driving so many into extreme hardship.”
