Qatar: 11 Killed in Labour Camp FireThe deaths of 11 workers in a Qatar labour camp fire on 1 June is yet another example of the government’s complete disregard for the migrant workers building the huge infrastructure programme in the lead-up to the 2022 World Cup. Read more here Five Years of Progress for Domestic Workers, But Much Still to be doneIn the five years since the International Labour Organization adopted Convention 189 on Domestic Workers, governments in nearly 50 countries have updated their legislation to provide better employment protection for domestic workers, and 22 countries have already ratified the Convention. Read more here IFI NEWSOECD Forum warned of families living on the edgeThe ITUC released a new global poll at the OECD Forum in Paris, reporting that one in ten are falling through the cracks in nine of the world’s largest economies. Read more here World Bank slashes 2016 global growth forecastThe World Bank recently released the June 2016 edition of its biannual Global Economic Prospects report, which includes a substantial reduction of the Bank’s 2016 global economic growth forecast, from 2.9 per cent in the January edition to 2.4 now. If realised, global economic growth in 2016 would be the same as in 2015, which was the slowest year since the Great Recession of 2009. Read more here CALLS TO ACTIONACT NOW! Turkey: Reinstate women union workersGlobal cosmetics giant Avon have sacked protesting workers in Turkey, mainly women, as part of a union-busting drive. The workers are demanding that Avon hire back the fired workers, register all workers as permanent employees, and recognize the union. In addition, the union is campaigning for an agreement with the company to provide reasonable wages, hours, benefits and working conditions, and a woman-friendly and harassment-free workplace.
