Midlands TUC welcomes Corby Borough Council stance on opposing regional pay

The Midlands TUC today (Friday) welcomes the decision by Corby Borough Council to publically oppose government moves to regionalise public servants pay. The council passed a resolution opposing regional pay at last night's full council meeting.

Midlands TUC Regional Secretary Rob Johnston said, 'The resolution passed last night at the full council meeting shows the true implications for the introduction of regional pay - both in Corby and for the wider east midlands region. It is unjustifiable to take money out of the pockets of the 7,100 hard working and dedicated public servants, particularly in a borough where average wages are already £92 a week less than the British average.'

'It almost goes without saying that the Conservatives on the council voted against the motion and therefore show quite clearly they are in favour of cutting pay to local residents. With up to 65% of public servants being women we can see just how the Tories value women workers in Corby. We find it regrettable that local politicians should treat their constituents in this way. Really, what have the Tories got against Corby?'

'We welcome the fact that both the Labour and Liberal Democrats voted for the motion and we intend to raise this issue with all the main party candidates in the forthcoming by election seeking their views so the people of Corby know where the candidates stand on this important issue.'
