Nepal Earthquake appeal

Issue date

Nepal Earthquake appealThe TUC is requesting affiliates, union members and the general public to make donations to the appeals set up by the Nepal Trades Union Congress (NTUC), Global Unions (UNI, PSI, BWI and EI), GEFONT, the Disasters Emergency Committee and the British Red Cross to help victims of the Earthquake in Nepal.

The earthquake which struck Nepal on the morning of 25 April 2015 has left a trail of destruction. According to latest estimates, it caused over 7,300 deaths and injured some 15,000 people in one of the poorest countries in Asia. Massive damage has been caused to the country’s underdeveloped, poorly maintained infrastructure and property. Many buildings including those providing vital public services and private dwellings in the capital Kathmandu as well as in surrounding villages were reduced to rubble. Thousands have been made homeless and are in dire need of food, clothes, shelter and essential medicines. An outbreak of epidemics is also feared due to the lack of potable water and poor sanitation.

The ITUC has appealed to the international community to mount a relief effort for Nepal and encouraged affiliates to take part in the initiative. The General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT) has set up a relief fund to help people on the ground. GEFONT has been mobilizing its affiliates and union members to rescue victims from the rubble. The proceeds of the GEFONT Appeal will be used to provide emergency relief for thousands of men, women and children affected by the disaster. The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) in the UK, too, has made an appeal for funds for emergency relief.
