Disability History Month 2023

16 November to 16 December 2023 is Disability History Month. TUC research shows disabled workers are less likely to be in work, are paid less than their non-disabled peers and have real issues getting and keeping in place their reasonable adjustments. This month we’re focusing on addressing the disability employment and pay gaps, putting and keeping in place reasonable adjustments and the role trade unions can play in ensure equality for disabled people in our workplaces.

16 November marks the start of Disability History Month. The month is an opportunity to focus in on the disabled people’s history and struggle for equality and human rights and to recommit ourselves to fight for the rights of disabled people across our society.

Sexual harassment of disabled women in the workplace

This report adds to the growing body of evidence that workplace cultures need to change. The sexual harassment that disabled women experienced had a devastating impact on both their health, and careers.

Workers’ experiences of long Covid

Our findings show 3 in 10 with long Covid have experienced symptoms lasting longer than a year – which means they should be protected at work. Over half of respondents tell the TUC they have experienced some form of discrimination or disadvantage due to their condition.

Disabled workers’ experiences during the pandemic

Not only have disabled people been disproportionately affected in terms of loss of life, with six in 10 Covid-19 related deaths being disabled people, but pre-existing workplace barriers have been accentuated by the pandemic. We conducted this research to better understand how pre-existing workplace barriers have been affected by the pandemic and the impact it has had on disabled workers.
