TUC condemns Dominican Republic's continued failure to protect human rights

Issue date

The TUC has written to the Dominican Republic's ambassador to the UK to protest the ongoing abuse of human rights in the country. Thousands of people, born in the republic but with Haitian ancestry, have been stripped of their citizenship, rendering them stateless. Estimates say as many as 66,000 people have been forcibly deported or fled after being classified as foreigners in their own country.

The Dominican Republic quit the Inter-American Court of Human Rights shortly before changing the law and removing citizenship from thousands of people. Despite protests from the ITUC earlier this year, no progress has been made in helping those affected. A recent Amnesty Report has slammed the government for creating "ghost children" through a combination of the removal of citizenship and the almost insurmountable  hurdles involved in reapplying for formal residence.

The TUC's letter to the Ambassador is attached.
