The TUC General Council join me in extending warm congratulations and greetings to you, and through you, to your members on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions.
I am conscious of the importance of the event, as it takes place against the background of a serious economic and social crisis in Zimbabwe. The TUC stands in solidarity with the people of Zimbabwe in their hour of need and will, in close collaboration with the international trade union movement, do its best to support their struggle against injustice and the repression of their democratic rights. The Anniversary will afford the opportunity, not only to celebrate successes, but also to discuss difficult issues in depth and map out effective strategies so that all trade unionists can, hand in hand with other progressive forces in the country, look forward to the future with confidence.
The achievements of the ZCTU in the past bear ample testimony to the commitment, determination and foresight of its leaders, all of whom will, without doubt, continue to defend the legitimate rights of the people of Zimbabwe despite numerous challenges ahead.
I wish you every success.
Brendan Barber
TUC General Secretary
