Commenting on government proposals announced today (Friday) to reduce redundancy payments for sacked public sector workers, TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

“Ministers seem determined to destroy morale in the public sector.

“Under David Cameron’s watch we have seen years of job losses, pay freezes and cuts to pensions. Now, to add insult to injury, the government wants to reduce redundancy terms for public sector workers forced from their jobs.

“These proposals have nothing to do with being ‘modern and consistent’. They are a deliberate attack on the terms and conditions of workers who deliver our vital public services.”

The Trade Union Bill, currently being debated in the House of Lords, will also stop public sector workers from having their union subs deducted from their wages.

In addition, the amount time off trade union representatives will have to support their members in the workplace will be capped in the public sector.
