TUC Young Workers Fringe, Congress 2014, Liverpool

The TUC Young Workers Forum had their first ever fringe at Congress this year. The title was 'The Next Generation - why we need young activists and how we can find them’ and it was run jointly with the Communication Workers Union.

The fringe was Chaired by Simon Sapper, who coordinates the Young Members network at CWU. Speaking on the panel was Chair of TUC Young Workers Forum, Fern McCaffrey, who described the work of the TUC young Workers Forum and the importance of having Young Workers Structures and Young People represented on union committees and boards. Fern was joined by young trade unionist Olufemi Igbekele, member of CWU, who described his experience being a young union member and the voice his union has given him. Jenny Tingle described work she is doing as an Officer at Prospect union to establish a young workers committee with help from their young members. And Andy Chalwood, Professor of Human Resource Management at Loughborough presented on his recent research into the ageing profile of trade union activists.

The fringe was well attended and there was a lively question and answer session at the end. It has paved the way for a young workers session at Congress in the future. Let’s make sure there’s another next year!

For anyone interested in Andy’s report, see the attached with a brief summary of the findings he discussed.
