Not from August 2026. Electronic and workplace balloting will be permitted for statutory trade union ballots from August 2026, so postal voting will no longer be the only permitted method.

These reforms are intended to modernise the balloting process and make participation easier for members.

Postal ballots will remain possible, but unions will also be able to use electronic or workplace balloting in accordance with the new statutory requirements.

What this means for union reps

  • Members may find it quicker and easier to vote in ballots.
  • Turnout may increase if online voting becomes available.
  • Unions will need secure and trusted voting systems before using electronic ballots.
