Overview

The TUC and unions are campaigning for a new law that would help protect the rights of millions of workers globally and the environment – making business legally responsible for preventing harms in their own operations and in their global value chains.

Join us for a mass lobby of Parliament on Wednesday 21 October - and help end corporate harms to people and planet.

Every worker, everywhere deserves decent work and to be treated with dignity. But too often, the workers behind the goods and services we use are paid poverty wages, work in unsafe conditions and face discrimination and gender-based violence. In many countries child labour and forced labour are rife, and workers wanting to join or form a union can face intimidation and violence, entrenching power imbalances and inequalities. Communities can be forced off their land, losing livelihoods, and the environment can be damaged by some companies’ irresponsible pursuit of profits.

Change is long overdue. Business models based on exploitation should have no place in our global economy. Trade unions have long fought for social and economic justice. The UK’s voluntary and fragmented approach to corporate accountability is not working, leaving victims and survivors to face, in many cases, a long struggle for justice. And the UK is being left behind, as other countries act to protect workers’ rights globally, including France, Germany and Norway.

The UK needs a new mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence law to protect workers, communities and the environment.

The TUC is working closely with unions, the Corporate Justice Coalition and Ethical Trading Initiative to call for new legislation.
