Holocaust Memorial Day Trust – Commemorative Sports Resources

Issue date

Holocaust Memorial Day 2013 logoHolocaust Memorial Day (HMD) - 27 January - is the UK's annual day to remember the victims of the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

The theme for HMD 2013 is Communities Together: Build a Bridge. On 27 January communities around the UK will come together to both remember the past and to also build a future where differences are respected. For the first time, the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT) has worked with Sporting Equals to release resources outlining how communities can come together to commemorate HMD by participating in sport and physical activity. Sport provides a unique opportunity for people from all parts of the neighbourhood to work together, support each other and establish friendships that will persevere far beyond the act of participating. There are many stories of people and movements that have been inspired to overcome adversity and injustice using sport as a platform. On HMD 2013, why not remember the past and start creating a better future by participating in sport and physical activity together?

There are several ways of incorporating sport into your activity and you can find out more by exploring the resources on HMD's sports page. Resources include:

  • A Community Sports Toolkit
  • Sports Activity Posters featuring:
  • Ben Helfgott, MBE, Olympic weightlifter and Holocaust survivor
  • Gino Bartali, multiple Tour de France cyclist and rescuer of Jews during the Holocaust
  • Adrien Niyonshuti, Olympic cyclist and Rwandan genocide survivor
  • Links to other Inspirational Sports Stories
