Commenting ahead of today’s (Thursday) parliamentary debate on the impact of equalisation of the state pension age on women, TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:
“For too long the state pension age has been an easy target for Chancellors of the Exchequer wanting to make stealth cuts.
“Today’s important debate will show that many people’s lives are affected as a consequence. Yet again, women, who have long been let down by the inadequate pensions system in this country, have borne the brunt of flawed policy making.
“We must not repeat the mistakes of the past. This is why the forthcoming state pension age review should be overseen by an independent commission, reporting directly to parliament and including trade union representatives.”
