Commenting on the publication today (Monday) of Laying the Foundations, the first report from the Industrial Strategy Commission, TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

“It’s a helpful start, which gets to grips with much of the nuts and bolts needed for a proper UK industrial strategy. And there is very welcome emphasis on productivity and growth outside of London, and in communities where good jobs are in short supply.

“We encourage the Commission to focus their attention next on workforce engagement. Working people are the engine that drives industry, and when they’re listened to, businesses are more likely to succeed.

“Trade unions, government and business need a new framework for working together towards shared goals, like improving the quality of jobs and raising living standards. And corporate governance reforms – such as rules to require workers’ seats on company boards – could improve the quality and long-term focus of decision making in Britain’s businesses.”
