Yorkshire & the Humber rises up to defend the right to strike

Over the past few weeks the TUC Yorkshire & the Humber has been working collaboratively with local Trades Councils and Trade Unions to organise rallies and marches across the region.

These events are being organised to demonstrate and vocalise our fierce opposition to the Government's latest attack on the right of all workers to strike to win fair and decent pay rises.

During the course of the last few weeks, as we've worked to organise these events, we have learned that:

  • City pay has risen three times faster than for nurses - those responsible for crashing the economy can still rake in the cash, while those who risked their lives for us during an unprecedented pandemic aren't worth the pay rise they're demanding.
  • The Rail Minister has already admitted it would have been cheaper to have settled the rail strike months ago, yet this government are still dragging their feet.
  • As teachers continue to work over 11hrs of unpaid overtime a week to ensure children get the support they need, our former Chancellor, Nadhim Zahawi, was settling with HMRC for tax avoidance.

This government is out of touch with the realities of working life and working people have had enough. Enough of wage freezes, enough of billions squandered on failed public contracts, enough of being clapped but not rewarded.

This is why on Wed 1st Feb workers across the Yorkshire & the Humber are coming together in Halifax, Hull, Leeds, Sheffield, Doncaster, Bradford, York and Beverley to demand better.
