All workers have the right to ‘reasonable’ time off work to family members or friends who depend on them in an emergency.

An employer does not have to pay for this time off, even though the leave may only be for a few hours during a paid working day.

Union reps have a key role in improving the organisation’s policies and procedure that are currently in place. You can negotiate with your employer to increase the entitlement to paid leave in certain circumstances and more days off per year.
