Paternity leave advances gender equality in the workplace. Fathers and partners of someone due to give birth or adopt a child have the right to paternity leave.
If fathers and partners are not entitled to paid paternity leave it can bring financial difficulties to a family. So it’s not surprising fathers are back at work soon after the birth.
Union reps have a key role in improving the basic paternity leave provisions. As a rep, you can support fathers and partners in the workplace to improve their rights on paternity leave or if there is no policy in place then work with the employer to introduce one.
The introduction of shared parental leave (SPL) will allow parents and adopters more flexibility in how they care for their child during the first year. Find out more
