Trades councils and community campaigning
For many localised disputes, it is often the case that winning support in the local community is at the heart of any successful campaign. This could be through attending picket lines to show support, signing petitions, platforming local speakers at events or helping with financial appeals. Our trades councils have been providing that local support for working people for over 100 years and continue to play a vital role in galvanising the community and bringing people together. Trades councils are the local trade union movement!
What is a Trades Union Council?
Trades union councils, often known as trade councils (TC's), are local groups of trade unionists who live and/or work in the area and are elected by their trade union.
TCs promote effective solidarity in disputes, joint campaigns on issues such as health, education, welfare and transport, and, in general, provide the vital link between the workplace and the wider working-class community. They play a vital role in bringing together solidarity and showing support for trade union members taking action Find out more about TC’s.
