At its meeting in May, the TUC Young Workers Forum discussed the Young Workers Month (YWM) held in March. Activity during the month fell into three categories; events for existing members and activists, events aimed at promoting the respective union to potential members and initiatives promoting unions more broadly.
Whilst all of theses activities and initiatives were worthwhile in and of themselves and contributed to a successful first TUC YWM, there was a collective agreement amongst members of the Forum that future Young Workers Months' would benefit from having a clear theme from which some clear and agreed aims and objectives might be derived, which in turn would assist unions, the TUC and the Forum in evaluating the month.
The Forum agreed that the theme for the November 2014 Young Workers Month would be ‘Activism’ and that it will ask unions to consider organising events and initiatives encouraging and increasing youth activism in unions. Forum wishes to use the November YWM to encourage more young people, and especially young women and BME members to get involved in union activity.
To assist in the planning of the November YWM, delegates to the Forum have been asked to return to their respective unions to consult on the nature and scope of the contributions that their respective unions will make. Unions have been asked to formally notify the TUC office of the events that they plan to run by the end of August 2014.
Already the office has committed to running a Young Trade Union Leaders Course which will take place on the last weekend in November. The office will also look at supporting a Young Question time event and will develop a resources pack for reps on organising young workers. We will also look to support activities run by regional TUC Young Workers Networks.
