The TUC responded to the Department of Business and Trade's consultation on trade strategy. The TUC said the UK government should:
ensure trade unions are consulted on trade policy and trade negotiations
ensure parliamentary scrutiny for trade negotiations
prioritise the EU as a trading partner as one which respects high standards of workers' rights.
halt negotiations with countries that do not respect fundamental workers’ rights including the Gulf Cooperation Council states, India, Israel, South Korea and Türkiye
halt negotiations with Israel due to its persistent breaches of international law and abuse of human rights
use trade remedies to protect the steel sector
regulate global supply chains to protect workers’ rights
replace Economic Partnership Agreements with unilateral tariff free access to the UK market for appropriate Global South countries
use its seat at the WTO to call for reformed global trade rules to allow Global South countries to protect domestic industries to enable Just Transition
