TUC Aid Appeal: Peruvian trade unionists hit by floods

TUC Aid is supporting an appeal by two trade unions hit by devastating floods in Peru.

The appeal, coordinated by Banana Link, was launched after floods and mudslides caused widespread devastation, estimated to have affected almost 800,000 people and killed more than 90.

Members of Banana Link's Peruvian trade union partners, SITAG (Sindicato De Trabajadores Agrarios Del Peru), and SITETSA (Sindicato De Trabajadores Empresa Talsa) desperately need financial help to rebuild their homes, offices and their lives following the floods.

Communication with affected areas is difficult due to power cuts and phone lines being down, but it is thought that, in the city of Piura, dozens of SITAG members have lost their homes, and the union office has collapsed. In the Province of Viru and its district Chao, Department of La Libertad at least a dozen SITETSA members have lost their homes.

Before this latest crisis, Banana Link and British unions had been supporting SITETSA in an ongoing dispute with Peruvian agribusiness company TALSA, where nine members of the Executive committee and two members of the union were sacked last year by the company in anti-union action.
