Striking workers

Mr Hassine Abassi
Secretary General

Union Générale Tunisienne du Travail (UGTT)

Dear Brother Abassi,

Message of solidarity

On behalf of the TUC and the 6 million workers our member unions represent, I wish you the best of luck with your general strike this Thursday against a government that is failing to reign in Islamic extremists and failing to rebuild the economy and the country.

I was shocked to hear about the violent attack on your headquarters on 3 December 2012 by Islamic hardliners. I have no doubt that the UGTT was targeted by these thugs precisely because it is a key voice for democracy and workers' rights in your country, witnessed both during the Tunisian revolution and the current fragile transition.

Our thoughts are with you and all our Tunisia sisters and brothers as you go on strike against this appalling intimidation. We call on the Tunisian authorities to bring these perpetrators to justice, and to finally put an end to this growing violence.

We stand with you and are ready to help in any way with can.

In solidarity

BRENDAN BARBER

General Secretary
