PCS Welcomes news on Sheffield civil service jobs but campaign continues

Issue date

The Public and Commercial Services union has welcomed reports today that around 100 civil service jobs will not be moved from Sheffield to London.

The union opposed plans by the former Department for Business, Innovation and Skills to move policy staff form the northern powerhouse city.

But following changes announced by new prime minister Theresa May, government work on higher and further education will transfer to the Department for Education whose staff work from the same office in Sheffield.

PCS General Secretary Mark Serwotka said “We welcome the fact the DfE recognises the value in having policy work located outside the capital and it just underlines how unnecessary and wrong it is for the business department to revert back to being so London-centric.

“There is clearly a direct link between these departments and we will continue to make the case for all these jobs to remain in Sheffield.”
