Commenting on International Court of Justice ruling by 10 votes to four, saying that the right to strike is protected under the International Labour Organization's 1948 Freedom of Association treaty, TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak said:

“The right to strike ensures that workers’ voices are heard at work.

“Today’s decision confirms that it is a fundamental part of international law.

“We are proud that trade unions and governments, including our own, stood up for the right of working people to withdraw their labour in defence of their pay and conditions when all other routes are exhausted.”
