Working people are ready to defend the hard-won protections in the Employment Rights Act

Published date

Since Reform UK announced their attack on the Employment Rights Act a few weeks ago, nearly 25,000 people have joined the campaign to defend their rights at work.

Nigel Farage's Great Repeal Bill – actually the Great Steal – would remove the Employment Rights Act, Renters Rights Act, and net-zero targets. His Party also plans to repeal the Equality Act, the law that stops you from being discriminated against at work, if elected.

Through these proposals, Reform UK wants to rig the economy in favour of their corporate backers, shifting power away from ordinary people and towards bad bosses, rogue landlords, and climate denying corporations.

The impact on working people could be huge, including:

  • Taking sick pay, bereavement leave and pregnancy protections away from millions.
  • Legalising fire-and-rehire tactics.
  • Weakening protections against discrimination at work.
  • Bringing back “no-fault” evictions and making it easier to raise rents.

The strength of the initial response, seen through the thousands signing the “stop the steal” petition and posting on social media, is important. Politicians across the political spectrum use the first few weeks after any announcement to gauge its popularity. Is this a voter winner or loser? Would it face an organised opposition or slide through unnoticed?

More campaigning will inevitably need to follow. But together, we are already sending a message to Reform UK and every party in Westminster.

Working people are organised and we want Parliamentarians to implement the Employment Rights Act in full for generations to come. No ifs, no buts.
