Standing together for unity and hope. 5 ways you can take action today

Published date
28 March. The Together Alliance’s National Unity March is a rising tide of hope. Put the date in your diary. Workers and communities standing together across our nations. Will you join the mobilisation?

At its best and strongest trade unionism is expressed in positive terms. We have values that any decent person should share. We have a vision of what the workplace, society and the world should look like. And we have a roadmap about how to win that vision though action.

Our values: respect, dignity, fairness, justice, equality, diversity, integrity, democracy and solidarity for all.

Our vision: A decent job, fair pay, opportunity, equality, choice, a powerful voice at work, democracy, freedom, high quality public services, a decent home for all, and a sustainable future for the planet.

Our unique roadmap: Join a union and organise, become a powerful agent for change in your workplace, in the economy and in your community, through collectivism and action.

The labour movement has been at the heart of the fight against discrimination, racism, hate politics and fascism for 90 years. ‘They shall not pass’ was the mantra of those who fought in The Battle of Cable Street in 1936. And today we strive to make the campaign call ‘Whose streets? Our streets’ a living truth and rallying cry, not a slogan.

But for decades our antiracist campaigning has mostly been structured around opposing campaigns, actions and events organised by racists. Too often we have been forced to be reactive, allowing bigoted politicians to set the agenda, and racists with violent and criminal histories to set the timetable of events held in our streets. Organising against something and letting the energy and tempo be set by the enemy will always be tactically limiting.

The formation of the Together Alliance and the announcement of the national action for unity and hope have inspired a massive sigh of relief across the labour movement, civil society, communities, faith groups and decent people.

28 March will be a public expression of support for our values, our vision and our roadmap for change.

Here are five things you can do to make the unity march an even bigger success:

  1. Sign up to get updates from the Together Alliance.

  2. Plan your journey to London on 28 March.

  3. Check the march route and find your trade union's bloc.

  4. Volunteer to act as a steward on 28 March.

  5. Use the Together Alliance’s resource bank of campaign materials.

Together we are stronger - together we can change the world.
