Commenting on the Employment Rights Bill consultations published today (Thursday), TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak said:
“Stronger protections at work for pregnant women and new mums – as well as better bereavement leave – are long overdue and common-sense changes.
“For too long, pregnant women and new mothers have been vulnerable to dismissal, and grieving workers have been denied the time they need away from work.
“These reforms will help create a modern economy fit for the 21st century, where workers are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.”
On proposals to cap fines at £75,000 or £150,000 for employers who deny unions access to workplaces, Paul added:
“The government must urgently rethink proposals on capping fines for firms that shut out unions.
“The likes of Amazon – who have thrown everything at stopping staff from having an independent voice at work – will be able to price in their union busting.
“Deep-pocketed companies should have to play by the rules, just like everyone else.”
