Futureproofing project

Manufacturing jobs are the backbone of the UK economy, but we have seen tens of thousands of job losses due to lack of investment. The TUC futureproofing project helps unions in protecting manufacturing jobs in high carbon industries.

We estimate that the future of 800 thousand manufacturing jobs depend on timely plans and investment in technological upgrades - to both meet climate targets and protect jobs against offshoring. When unions get on the front foot, we can protect jobs against threats of closure or offshoring - while meeting climate targets.

Our project works with affiliated unions in manufacturing, to assist reps and members to advocate for, develop and negotiate futureproofing plans in their workplace. This includes protecting jobs from offshoring and developing plans so that any workers who are affected have a job-to-job transition.

Our team can support you to:

  • Understand - and help members understand - the implications of climate action and other policies for the workplace
  • Assess employer plans and negotiate improvements
  • Pro-actively develop transition plans to futureproof their workplace
  • Access and pay for technical expertise

Through our partnership with New Economy Organisers Network (NEON), we can also help you:

  • Build coalitions that can help you campaign for the investment needed for your workplace to succeed
  • Access training and spokesperson opportunities
