Commenting on today’s announcement that Greater Manchester is to enter into tier 3 restrictions, Lynn Collins TUC North West Regional Secretary said:

“Tier 3 restrictions are going have a massive impact on working people in Greater Manchester. There are huge questions outstanding about what support, if any, will be available to protect jobs and livelihoods.

"No one should be pushed into destitution. We’ve been saying throughout that workers should have 80% of their wages covered through the job support scheme where businesses are forced to close.

“And for firms that can stay open but are hit by reduced demand, we need a more generous short-time working scheme, with significantly reduced employer contributions.

“We also need extra help for the overlooked self-employed. And the government must get a grip on its chaotic test and trace system and start paying sick pay at the real living wage to everyone self-isolating.”

“Greater Manchester, like Liverpool City Region and Lancashire before them, shouldn’t have to negotiate for help  -  the promise of ‘whatever it takes’ is needed now more than ever.”
