Commenting on the vote expected to take place today (Tuesday) in the House of Commons on a decision by the House of Lords that the voting age should be lowered to 16 for the EU referendum, TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

“The EU referendum will seal the fate of the next generation of workers. It will affect their workplace rights, their opportunity to work in other EU countries and the future industrial policy and supply of jobs in the UK. It would be wrong to tell today’s 16 and 17 year olds that this decision about their future will be made without them.”

The TUC has campaigned for the voting age to be lowered to 16 since the policy was agreed at the TUC’s annual congress in 1999.
