The TUC is warning that a rise young people without work or employment – shown in new figures published today (Thursday) by ONS – is just the early sign of a larger impact on young workers from coronavirus.

The number of young people aged 16 to 24 not in employment, education or training rose by 8,000 in the first quarter of 2020.

The union body is warning that the rise next quarter will be much higher and is calling on the government to establish a Job Guarantee Programme to protect young workers from mass unemployment.

TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

"Young workers are more likely to be in the employment sectors hit hardest by coronavirus. We can't abandon their generation to mass unemployment and lost life chances.

“That’s why we need a plan to make sure everyone has a job. The government should bring in a Job Guarantee Scheme to make sure every young worker has a good job on a fair wage, getting work experience and building skills for their future.

“That’s how we’ll work our way out of the coming recession.”
