Commenting on the announcement today (Friday) that the EHRC will conduct a statutory inquiry to identify actions to address racial inequalities highlighted by the coronavirus pandemic, Frances O’Grady said:

“We welcome the EHRC’s decision to use its formal powers to conduct this inquiry. Unions will engage fully with EHRC to ensure that the voices of Black workers are at the heart of their investigation.

“We should all be appalled by the disproportionate impact this pandemic has had on BME people, and by the unacceptable loss of lives and livelihoods. We must seize this opportunity to identify and tackle the underlying causes and end the racism that’s blighted so many people’s lives.

“Government must commit to fully implementing the letter and spirit of those recommendations. Because Black Lives Matter.”
