Commenting on today’s (Tuesday) labour market statistics from the Office for National Statistics – which show real wages up by 0.7% in the last year – TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

“Theresa May must fulfil her promise to end pay austerity. Families can’t make ends meet without being forced into the red.

“The government should use the Budget to fund a new deal for public sector pay, which is barely growing in real terms. And the Prime Minister must make sure that work pays by raising the minimum wage to £10, cracking down on insecure work, ending unfair pay for agency workers and banning zero-hours contracts.

“The jobs market is tightening but this is not leading to decent pay increases. Unions are fighting hard to get workers better pay, but the government should also give unions the right to go into every workplace and negotiate with employers for fair pay rises.”
