Commenting on the government’s announcement today (Tuesday) to approve expansion at Heathrow Airport, TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

“The case for Heathrow expansion was proven long ago. It will create thousands of high-quality jobs and apprenticeships. And it has the backing of both trade unions and businesses.

“This needs to be a clear and final decision. Work must start as soon as possible, with the government doing all it can to keep progress in the fast lane.”

Editors note

- The TUC’s backing for Heathrow expansion followed the recommendation of the Airports Commission in July 2015. As part of its decision, the Airports Commission called for training opportunities and apprenticeships for local people, so that nearby communities benefit from jobs generated by the new infrastructure. It argued that Heathrow Airport Ltd should work with local authorities and schools to ensure local people, including young people, are able to benefit from this project and that Heathrow Airport Ltd should support the London Living Wage.
- The Trades Union Congress (TUC) exists to make the working world a better place for everyone. We bring together more than 5.5 million working people who make up our 49 member unions. We support unions to grow and thrive, and we stand up for everyone who works for a living.
