Commenting on the announcement by Shadow Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson today (Thursday) that that reforming the broken childcare system will be her “first priority in government”, TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak said:

“It’s clear our current childcare system is not fit for purpose.

“Quality, dependable childcare is vital for working families. But a lack of government investment is putting huge pressure on nurseries, leaving our childcare workers overstretched, undervalued and underpaid.

“We desperately need funded high-quality childcare for all parents – and a long overdue pay rise for childcare workers.”
