We need your help to scrap the Universal Credit five-week wait

During 16 March - 12 May, 2.6 million declarations were made for Universal Credit (UC). That’s almost five times the rate just before the crisis hit the UK.

The government’s flagship UC benefits system does not offer enough support to see working people through the hard times to come.

Nearly a million existing emergency payment loans have been made to claimants who are unable to wait five weeks for their first payment. The five-week wait has pushed people into poverty and debt, with rising numbers being referred to foodbanks.

There is simply no justification for the five-week wait for Universal Credit - it has to go!

We are urgently calling for the government to end the five-week wait by converting existing emergency payment loans to grants.

We need your help to build up our evidence on why the five-week wait must go. Tell us your experiences or thoughts about Universal Credit and let's put a stop to the five-week wait.

Please respond by 12 June.
