Global union week of protest

14-19 February 2011

Global unions have started a week of action from 14 February until and as close as possible to the fifth anniversary of the Pasta de Conchos mine tragedy on 19 February. Rather than hold the company to account the Mexican government continues to persecute the miners and electrical workers unions, such that the leader of 'Los Mineros', Napoleon Gomez, is now in forced exile in Canada, while some of his colleagues remain in jail.

Actions around the world have begun. Support the campaign now by writing to the Mexican government through the LabourStart campaign, and joining the UK demonstration on Thursday 17 February outside the Mexican embassy (see below).

Join the Global Unions - IMF, ICEM, ITF and UNI - in calling on the Mexican government to:

  • Hold employer and government officials accountable for the Pasta de Conchos mine explosion that killed 65 miners on 19 February 2006.
  • Abolish systemic violations of workers' freedom of association, including employer-dominated 'protection contracts' and interference in union elections.
  • End the use of force-by the state or private parties-to repress workers' legitimate demands for democratic unions, better wages and working conditions, and good health and safety conditions.
  • End the campaign of political persecution against the Mexican Miners' Union and the Mexican Electrical Workers' Union.
Action in the UK

Unions will be demonstrating at the Mexican Embassy - 16 St. George Street, London W1S 1FD - at 1pm on Thursday 17 February to protest against the continuing violation of labour rights in Mexico.

It is vitally important that we increase the pressure on the Mexican Government (which remains a key part of the NAFTA agreement) to refrain from interfering in union elections and to respect basic labour rights to organise and bargain collectively.
