UNISON is Britain’s leading public sector trade union, with more than 1.3 million members working in the public services, private, voluntary and community sectors and in the energy services. We employ 1,200 staff, including approximately 370 at our national centre in Euston, central London and the remainder in our 12 regions across the UK, in Northern Ireland.
We are seeking an experienced and motivated person to play a leading role as a Regional Organiser in strengthening workplace organisation, supporting activists and delivering outstanding representation for members. Our region covers a large area including Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, Milton Keynes, Oxford, Southampton, Buckinghamshire, and beyond.
Working under the strategic direction of the region to meet organisational objectives, you will lead organising, recruitment and bargaining activity across a portfolio of branches. You will work closely with lay activists to build branch strength, develop campaigns, increase membership density, negotiate with employers and support members through workplace change.
The successful candidate will have significant experience in high level and strategic organising, representation and collective bargaining, alongside strong leadership, communication and project management skills. You will be confident analysing complex information, influencing stakeholders at all levels, mentoring activists and managing teams and projects. A thorough understanding of trade union values, employment law, equality and democratic participation is essential.
This is a challenging and rewarding role for someone committed to building union power, supporting members and advancing UNISON’s objectives of organising, bargaining, campaigning and equality.
The Southeast Region aims to represent and reflect the entire public sector in the Southeast, we support and encourage applications from underrepresented groups, including those from Black, Asian and non-white backgrounds. This ensures our union truly reflects our members, the community, and public sector workers, reaching those who need us most. In UNISON, ‘Black’ – with a capital B – is used to indicate people with a shared history. ‘Black’ is used in a broad political and inclusive sense to describe people in the UK who have suffered from colonialism and enslavement in the past and continue to experience racism and diminished opportunities in today’s society. This includes people of African, Caribbean, Asian, Arab, and other heritage.
We are committed to promoting work-life balance and supporting staff to achieve this. This is a field-based role and whilst we aim to allocate work to reduce travel time, you will need to be able to travel in and around the Southeast Region, including to our Woking Office where our regional centre is based, as required and occasionally to London for training, meetings, or other purposes.
