Active Union Work with Black and Minority Ethnic Community Groups.
The Regional TUC has now published a report following a major research initiative looking at:-
'Trade Union and Black and Minority, Ethnic (BME) Committees in Yorkshire and the Humber: employment representatives and community organisation in a context of change.'
A copy of the Report is available to download from http://www.tuc.org.uk/extras/TUC_BME.pdf..The report raises some key issues for Unions and Local Trades Union Councils to address and is a key building block to developing the work of the Regional TUC's Race Awareness Forum to which there is an open invitation to Union members to attend. Details of future meetings are provided at the end of this circular.
Page 42 of the Report identifies a range of practical recommendations that emerged from the research project. Some Unions and Local Trades Union Councils will already be carrying out some of this work and the next stage of this project will look at some key 'case studies' to establish best practice examples on which Unions and Local Trades Union Councils can draw to develop their own work.
However Unions and Local Trades Union Councils can take action now in workplaces and local communities to take forward initiatives drawing on the report and its recommendations. The Regional TUC will provide support and advice to assist you.
Let us know what you're doing - use the website.
One of the key roles of the regional TUC is to build a strong network of contacts and examples of the good work in which Unions and Local Trades Union Councils are involved. To this end we have set up the'Race Awareness pages' of the Yorkshire and Humber TUC website at http://www.tuc.org.uk/equality/tuc-10493-f0.cfm. The pages provide details of campaigns, contacts, learning and trades union education opportunities, leaflets, reports and examples of best practice initiatives on work to tackle racism and promote greater community cohesion.
The site is regularly updated and we want your stories and examples of best practice. Please send them to
Chris Beastall at cbeastall@tuc.org.uk .
All Unions and Local Trades Union Councils are entitled to send members along to the regular meetings of the Race Awareness Forum, and any trade unionist in the Yorkshire and Humber region is welcome to attend.
The next meetings are:-
The meetings are held at the Regional TUC Offices at 2pm.
Please make sure your organisation is represented and plays its part in:-
